Importance of Abstracting, Indexing and Journal Listing Top

An abstracting and indexing services are important components of publication process. Abstracting database services lists abstracts of the journal articles whereas citation indexing services, indexes journal's content at the article level by assigning subject headings (descriptors or keywords) to each one and then making these articles searchable in the citation indexing database. These services also index other bibliographic elements of journal articles, including authors, titles, date of publication, etc.

  Abstracting Top

Abstracting Databases

Assist readers in deciding whether or not to read a full text; enable readers to note the important outcomes on a topic because abstracts contain complete bibliographic citations, so they are useful when it comes to writing up research; allow librarians/readers to discover information quickly; to cross-reference and saves time because researchers can have a clear overview of an article without having to read the entire text.[2]

  Citation Indexing Top

Citation index (indexing) is an ordered list of cited articles, each supplemented by a list of citing articles.[3] Citation indexing services: Enable readers, editors, reviewers and all concerned stake holders, to familiarize themselves with an article and decide if they need to explore it further; act as a selection guide to content; are a tool for article analysis; create a link between readers and the authors of the original publication; saves time because it is much easier for a reader to find relevant information when it is indexed; makes the information widely available; easy to access and act as in information retrieval tool for organizations such as libraries and archives.[2]

Indexed journals are largely of higher scientific quality when compared to nonindexed journals. The primary criteria for journal's content to be indexed are: consistency, scientific quality, adherence to ethical standards and principles, production quality, timely publication and citation analysis.[4]

University Grants' Commission Journal Listing Top

The University Grants' Commission (UGC) has been maintaining Indian scientific journals' list since last more than 10 years. However, to combat the threat of predatory publications, UGC, India established “CARE” by issuing a public notice on 28th November, 2018, with the crucial aim of promoting research integrity and publication ethics among the Indian academia. The UGC's Consortium for Academic and Research Ethics (CARE) list was launched in June 2019 and it made an enormous impact on Indian academia and in publishing industry.[5]

The UGC-CARE journal listing is evolving to become a valuable resource and reference source for the quality scientific publishing in India. The IJOT has been a nationally known academic journal listed in the UGC-CARE list, publishing quality research in themes of OT as per UGC-CARE mandates.[5]

The IJOT is abstracted with the national and international abstracting partners, indexed in Indian Citation Index and listed in UGC-CARE List[1],[6],[7] [Table 1] and [Figure 1]. The IJOT is in process of fulfillment of all requirements for international indexing in databases such as PubMed, Scopus etc. Wolters Kluwer India Private Limited - Medknow Group of Publication House Executives have been continually assessing the IJOT for its readiness for international indexing applications and have been providing feedback to the Editorial Board.

Research publication in an indexed journal, is one of the essential criteria for appointment and promotion of a teaching faculty in a healthcare institution. The guidelines for publication related criteria are laid down by Medical Council of India such as number of publications; type of publication i.e., original articles, reviews, case series etc.; author order: First three authors; corresponding author and publication in a journal indexed in bibliographic databases such as Medline, PubMed Central, Citation Index, Sciences Citation Index Expanded, EMBASE, Scopus, Directory of Open Access Journals.[8],[9]

The IJOT editorial board urges to all OT researchers to prefer publishing their research studies in the AIOTA's official publication i.e., the IJOT which is indexed in Indian Citation Index and listed in UGC-CARE list as well as abstracted in reputed national and international databases, and not get carried away by the promotional avenues of the predatory journals.
