The All India Occupational Therapists' Association (AIOTA), and its constituent body, the Academic Council of Occupational Therapy (ACOT), has been striving hard since its inception in 1983, for building professional competence, thereby enabling its members to deliver safe and effective therapies in their clinical practice, thus helping to protect the healthcare consumers, i.e., patient population of India. This kind of evidence-based practice scenario is considered to be sustainable and safe, globally, for effective implementation of health services. Based on these international norms, AIOTA believes in keeping its members updated for upgrading their knowledge and skills, for effective and safe clinical practice.[1],[2]

The 56th Annual National Conference of the AIOTA, i.e., OTICON' 2019, was successfully organized by the AIOTA itself in collaboration with the Occupational Therapy (OT) Department of PGIMER, Chandigarh, from 8th to 10th February, 2019. His Excellency, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator Union Territory, Chandigarh, Sri V. P. Singh Badnore, graced the occasion as the chief guest of the inaugural function. This conference has the highest attendance record, till date, of >700 delegates, students, and guests from India and overseas.
Preconference continuing OT education (COTE) was organized by the ACOT on “Advanced OT in Neuro-Rehabilitation” with resource faculties: Dr. Kavita Mahamankar and Dr. Priya Kothavale - Tawde from Mumbai. The areas covered by them were OT intervention in visual impairments and aquatic therapy in neurological disorders.
Dr. Dimitrios Mylonadis, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, CEO and Clinical Director, Hopscotch Children's Therapy Centre, and a Faculty in the Child and Family Practice, London, delivered Key Note Address. Dr. Rehab Zaytoun MD, a Faculty at Fayoum University, Egypt; Dr. Alok Sharma, MS, M. Ch, Director and Consultant, NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, Navi Mumbai; and Dr. Uday Govindrao Bodhankar MD, Nagpur, Ex-National President, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, were the eminent guest speakers.
Website of AIOTA's International Chapter was also launched during the inaugural function. The AIOTA noticed few of the shortcomings due to pertinent reasons, which were assured to be taken care of in the future events. Dr. Bhavinder Singh Suchdev, PGIMER, Chandigarh, was the Organizing Secretary, and Dr. Punita V. Solanki, Mumbai, was the Chairperson, Scientific Program Committee.
Honors at OTICON' 2019
The AIOTA was pleased to honor the stalwart of the profession, viz., Dr. Vijay Govindrao Bodhankar, formerly Vice President and Convener of Hyderabad Branch of the AIOTA with the prestigious Life Time Achievement Award, during the inaugural function of OTICON' 2019 at Chandigarh. The Professional Excellence Awards were conferred upon Dr. Punita V. Solanki, Mumbai; Dr. Subrata Kumar Halder, Cuttack; and Dr. Sanjeev M. Padankatti, Vellore, for their selfless dedicated services to the development of the profession and the AIOTA. Dr. Joseph Sunny was the recipient of Young OT Achiever Award.

OTICON' 2020
The 57th Annual National Conference of the AIOTA will be organized at Mumbai, Maharashtra, to commemorate the platinum jubilee of OT School and Center, Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College and King Edward VII Memorial (KEM) Hospital, Mumbai, in January 2020. OT Department of KEM Hospital in collaboration with other teaching institutions of Mumbai, i.e., OT Departments of Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital; Lokmanya Tilak Municipal (LTM) Medical College and LTM General Hospital; All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai; AND DY Patil College of OT, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai Branch of the AIOTA, are working hard to organize this event in a grand way. I urge all the occupational therapists across the globe, to visit the website regularly, for the announcements of the dates and venue of OTICON' 2020. Dr. Jayashri S. Kale, Professor and Head, OT School and Center, KEM Hospital, Mumbai, is the Organizing Secretary, and Dr. Amitabh K. Dwivedi, Professor and Dean, Jaipur OT College, Jaipur, is the Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee for this conference.
Online Election
General body (GB) meeting held at Chandigarh on February 9, 2019, unequivocally decided to conduct AIOTA elections for electing new Executive Committee members and Office Bearers for the tenure of April 2020 to March 2024 as paper-free process, thus supporting the global initiatives of Go Green! The policy change from postal ballot to online voting is expected to facilitate more members to get involved in the election process. The AIOTA is in the process of getting proposals for developing a software application to enable online voting process. The AIOTA requests all its members to update their e-mail address and contact number in the AIOTA's membership directory using member login page of the AIOTA website (www.aiota.org) on or before May 31, 2019, to get involved in the process of election. On recommendation of GB, Dr. Lakshmanan Sethuraman, NIMHANS, Bangalore, is appointed as the Chairman, AIOTA Election Committee.
Continuing Education
On the principle of academic excellence, educational equity, and fairness to all learners, the ACOT of AIOTA is regularly organizing short- and long-term academic activities to update the members of the AIOTA with advancements and research, with the sole purpose to improvise their clinical practice, thereby enabling quality in the treatments of the ailing community.
The AIOTA's very prestigious academic event, the Annual 9-Month Third Fellowship Program in Advanced OT: Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation and Ergonomics, India, 2019, by the ACOT, is all set to begin in September 2019 with reputed national and international faculties. The Second Fellowship on Neuro-Rehabilitation will be concluded in June 2019. Members of the AIOTA have welcomed this academic move of the AIOTA which is evident from the successful completion of First Fellowship Program and effective conduct of the ongoing Second Fellowship Program. ACOT strives hard to cultivate the fellowship programs with high academic excellence.
Jupiter Hospital, Thane, Maharashtra, in collaboration with ACOT, AIOTA, is organizing 12-week Advance OT Certificate course on Musculoskeletal and Neuro-Rehabilitation from April 6, to June 29, 2019, at Jupiter Hospital, Thane.
The AIOTA has collaborated with OTcourses.com, a US-based company to introduce online home-based COTE courses of high academic excellence on affordable prices for members of the AIOTA on vivid areas of OT practice. The courses are available from January 2019 onward.
Congratulations to authors whose research studies and articles are published in the Indian Journal of Occupational Therapy (IJOT) 2018 Volume 50. Members have appreciated the upgraded version of the IJOT, the publication of which is now outsourced to Wolters Kluwer India Private Limited and Medknow Group of Publications, effective from Volume 50 Issue 3.
Journal Upgradation
I sincerely appreciate the hard work and visionary approach of our Editorial Board of the IJOT, specifically Associate Editor, Dr. Punita V. Solanki, and Assistant Editor (Promotion), Dr. Lakshmanan Sethuraman, for helping the Editor-in-Chief and the Editor Dr. Shashi Oberai, in upgrading the journal, as per the requisites of international standards, for achieving the vision and mission of quality, consistency, and accuracy and fulfilling the requirements for upgrading the indexing status of the journal. The contribution of members of the Review Board is also duly acknowledged in improvising the quality of articles by their valuable and expert comments, for publication of articles after going through the set norms of double-blinded peer-review process.
